A moment of reflection
Last evening I joined Dad for a walk around the circle with Winston, the dog. As we rounded a bend in the road we heard a car approaching. It quickly spun around the corner moving to the middle of the road to give us space. As the car moved a chipmunk dashed into the road and got caught under the back tire of the car that was in such a hurry. The car continued with no knowledge of the life it had cost. I looked at the eyes of the animal not yet dead. My eyes and then my hand found a melon sized rock at the side of the road. Dad, reading my actions, moved for the rock. It was all we could do. Now the animal’s eyes were blank and the body was still. Dad moved him into the woods and off the road. We tried to give dignity and respect to the small creature that will never understand cars and roads, but mostly it gave dignity and respect for ourselves as part of this world.
